What is the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative?

The DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative is a national faith-based leadership development program for urban youth workers in Christian organizations.

Is there college credit available?

While DVULI is not an accredited training, graduates have been able to receive credit for their learning as part of college degree programs. Documentation and materials on topics covered, resources used, seat hours and total program hours are available through the DVULI staff office.

Who may participate in the program?

Each year in five cities, eight to 12 qualified candidates are selected to participate in the program. Participants will represent a group of emerging leaders who have a high probability of positively impacting their local ministry to disadvantaged youth.

How are participants selected?

Participants are recommended by community leaders and their peers and must meet the following objective criteria:

  • leads a program or ministry that impacts youth directly
  • demonstrates a willingness to share leadership with others
  • has a strong desire to learn and has a teachable spirit
  • is in a position to implement plans for change
  • has been in ministry for a minimum of three years
  • is able to participate fully as part of his or her job
  • is personally active in a church

How long is the program?

Over a 15-month period participants are required to attend two week long conferences, five local weekend training modules--which are held every other month--and eight discussion group sessions.

How will participants benefit from being in the program?

Participants will learn from experienced urban ministry leaders, acquire powerful tools for more effective ministry, fellowship with other emerging leaders, hear top-name inspirational speakers, and develop skills for training youth leaders.

Is there a cost to participate?

Selected participants are awarded full scholarships that cover the cost for all local training modules, national conferences, books, and travel.
